Pumas Explodes over the Referee's Decisions Against Monterrey… and Sergio Ramos Faces a Potential 15-Match Suspension
Pumas issued a statement calling for an investigation into the match against Monterrey… and the response from the Referee Commission didn’t take long
The victory of Rayados de Monterrey in their visit to Pumas is still being talked about… and it seems it will continue to do so during the FIFA break. Pumas felt absolutely wronged by the refereeing and didn’t hesitate to issue a strong statement. The Referee Commission wasn’t idle and their response came quickly.

The statements from Pumas and the Referee Commission
The reason for the complaints from Pumas has to do with the leniency shown by the referee towards Sergio Ramos, who was sent off during stoppage time… although he had previously been involved in several confrontations with different Monterrey players. “Their center-back should’ve been sent off in the 20th minute, no matter who he is,” said coach Efraín Juárez.
Hours after the match, with tensions lowered, Pumas issued a harsh statement requesting an investigation: “We are an institution that will never stop raising our voice in the face of a refereeing performance like today’s. We demand from the general director of the Referee Commission, Lic. Juan Manuel Herrero, a detailed analysis of this match and for him to take action to ensure real growth in refereeing in Mexico.”
How many matches can Sergio Ramos be suspended for?
The response from the Referee Commission came quickly through their social media: “In response to the statement from the board of Pumas de la UNAM sent to this Commission regarding the events that occurred during the match between Pumas and Monterrey on March 16, 2025, this Commission will conduct a complete investigation to provide an answer to the club and the fans, through the analysis of the key plays that generated controversy.”
Meanwhile, Monterrey fears that Sergio Ramos may face a suspension of up to 15 matches, as stated in Rule 12 of the FMF, for displaying violent conduct towards an opponent… as reflected in the match report. It seems unlikely that this sanction will be enforced, but it is possible that he will face several matches of suspension… and will not be available for the upcoming classic against Tigres on April 13.
