Soccer Player in Mexico Goes from Playing on Saturday to Coaching on Sunday
The announcement came less than three hours after Serbian Veljko Paunovic was dismissed as head coach of the Felinos, who currently sit in third place in the Clausura 2025.
Argentinian midfielder Guido Pizarro announced his retirement from professional soccer this Sunday, and immediately, Tigres UANL appointed him as their new head coach.
A Historic Transition at Tigres
"Due to his career, leadership, and preparation, the board has decided to name Guido Pizarro as the new head coach," Tigres stated in a press release.
At 35, Pizarro retires after 11 seasons with the Felinos, having served as the team’s captain since the Clausura 2019. His legacy is undeniable: four Liga MX titles, one Concacaf Champions League, three Campeón de Campeones trophies, one Copa MX, and two Campeones Cup titles.
"As part of his preparation to become a head coach, Guido completed his coaching course with the Mexican Football Federation, earning his Pro License. Additionally, he holds a Master's in Sports Management from the University of Barcelona and a specialization in emotional coaching," the club added.
Beyond his academic credentials, Tigres' management trusts that Pizarro will maintain his leadership in the locker room. While the team had been achieving solid results under Paunovic, some members of the press and fans believed the Serbian coach lacked absolute authority over the squad.
Locker Room Support and a Concacaf Test
Pizarro is part of a generation of multi-champion players with Tigres, alongside stars such as French striker André-Pierre Gignac and Argentine goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán. Having their backing will be crucial for the club’s eight-time Liga MX champions to silence critics and maintain their strong performances on the field.
His first challenge as head coach will be this Tuesday when the Felinos face FC Cincinnati in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16.
