Fernando Gago Dodges Awkward Question About Marcelo Gallardo and River Plate
Fernando Gago’s Boca Juniors are getting the results — they’re leading their group — but the team still owes when it comes to the quality of play.
In the post-match press conference following the 1–0 home win against Barracas Central at La Bombonera, the Boca head coach explained why he was satisfied with the result, though he admitted he would’ve liked to see “more patience and control.” But when a journalist brought up Marcelo Gallardo, it was “Pintita” himself who sidestepped the remark with the elegance that once defined him as a player.
The Bombshell
Journalist Mariana Castillo Navarro said, “Well, always elegant on the sidelines, and something worth highlighting: no matter the result, you’re always here, answering our questions and listening — unlike some other coaches who cancel press conferences. That’s very much appreciated,” making a clear reference to “El Muñeco,” River Plate’s coach, who had decided to skip his post-match press conference following a poor showing against Sarmiento de Junín, in which River drew with Franco Armani emerging as the savior and standout figure.

Fernando Gago’s Response
In response to the journalist’s subtle public critique of Gallardo’s absence from the press conference, Boca coach Fernando Gago first smiled at the compliment, acknowledging the remark about his “elegance,” and then skillfully dodged the jab, shifting the focus back to football:
"I think every match is about trying to improve and finding the best version of the team. Beyond the previous games, we didn’t play well in the last one. Today, we did — at least for 45 minutes. We had eight or nine quick recoveries that allowed us to go on the attack again, and that’s what we’re looking for. In the second half, we didn’t have the kind of control we need. Every match helps us improve, whether we win or lose," he said in response to the Gallardo reference.
The Superclásico
The most decisive game of the year for Fernando Gago will come on Matchday 15 of the Torneo Apertura: the Superclásico against River Plate, scheduled for April 27 at El Monumental.
When repeatedly asked about the upcoming clash, Gago was clear and firm:
"We have to focus on Belgrano. That’s the most important match we have right now," he concluded.
