Tata Martino: Is He Running as Gago's Successor at Boca?
Tata Martino gave an interview to ‘ESPN’ in which he didn’t rule out coaching Boca Juniors in the near future
Since leaving the bench at Inter Miami for personal reasons a few months ago to make way for Javier Mascherano, Tata Martino has not returned to coaching. For now, he is relaxing in his hometown of Rosario, regaining his strength. However, in an interview with ‘ESPN’, he didn’t close the door on coaching Boca Juniors in the near future.

Tata Martino won't return to coaching in the short term
Tata Martino is clear that, if an opportunity comes up in the next few months, he won’t accept it. “The reality is that I’m not going to work for several months next year, there’s nothing to discuss about that, especially not where.” However, his name was one of those mentioned to replace Fernando Gago after the traumatic elimination of Boca Juniors in the preliminary stage of the Copa Libertadores against Alianza Lima.
In fact, this isn’t the first time that Tata Martino’s name has been linked with the Boca Juniors bench. After Hugo Ibarra’s dismissal, it was said that he was the top option considered by Juan Román Riquelme. However, Tata Martino turned down the offer, and in the end, it was Jorge Almirón who took over as coach at Boca Juniors.
Boca travels to Rosario after the FIFA break
Now, even though Gago seems to have weathered the storm, his name is still in the spotlight… and he gave an interesting answer about it: “When I left Inter Miami, I said I needed to be in Rosario for at least a few months, and that’s what happened. I’ve been in Rosario since December. So when something needs to happen, it will happen.”
It’s also curious that, after the FIFA break, Boca Juniors will travel to Rosario to face Newell’s on matchday 11 of the Argentine league, and perhaps Tata Martino will be seen at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa. If that happens, there’s no doubt that speculations about a possible move to Boca Juniors in the coming months will start to multiply.
