Bombshell at Boca Juniors: Riquelme Plans Major Overhaul, Including Coaching Change
Amid their worst streak in history, Boca Juniors faces internal turmoil. Rumors suggest Miguel Ángel Russo may lead his final match, and major leadership changes are underway.
End of the Football Council Era
In recent hours, the Boca world has been flooded with speculation and sudden reports from journalists. The truth is known only by club president Juan Román Riquelme, who is said to be preparing drastic decisions for the future of the Buenos Aires club.
Due to poor performance and the worst winless run in their history—11 games without a victory—the Board of Directors, led by Riquelme, will dissolve the Football Council. Only one of its three members will remain at the club. This means Mauricio “Chicho” Serna and Raúl Alfredo Cascini will no longer serve as advisors. The one staying on, though his role is unclear, is Marcelo “Chelo” Delgado.
These recent events have left the president under pressure, and according to internal sources, he is seeking to relieve it by distancing himself from two of his most criticized collaborators—though Delgado remains untouched.
Along with the dissolution of the so-called "Mate Council"—named on social media for their habitual mate drinking—the Board will now aim to include a Sporting Director. Many names are being floated:
Some insist on Carlos Bianchi, seen as a mentor to Riquelme, though his circle says “El Virrey” is fully retired and no longer interested in working.
Another candidate mentioned is José Pékerman, respected for his work with Argentina’s youth national teams. Though usually mentioned as a coaching candidate, this time he's rumored for a managerial role.
Potential Successors for Russo
Other names being discussed include club legends like Martín Palermo, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, or Navarro Montoya. There are also less popular but respected figures such as Gabriel Milito, Gustavo Quinteros, and even former River Plate player Hernán Crespo.
Given the current crisis, supporters are demanding a strong figure on the sidelines—someone capable of handling pressure and managing egos inside the locker room.
The name gaining the most traction in debates is Cristian “Kily” González, as a potential replacement for Russo. A former player who wore the Boca jersey during the 1995-96 season, he reportedly turned down Real Madrid to play alongside Diego Armando Maradona in his return to the club.
