Is Cavani Leaving Boca Juniors? Danubio Wants Him Back and He Responds Clearly
Edinson Cavani’s future at Boca Juniors is once again in the spotlight—this time not because of rumors from Europe, but due to an unexpected proposal from his home country. Danubio, the club where he began his professional career, made a heartfelt public invitation to bring him back, sparking headlines that reached the striker himself.
At 38, Cavani is going through an inconsistent period with Boca, often criticized for his low goal tally and the injuries that have sidelined him in key moments. His role in the recent Club World Cup was limited: he only played in the draw against Auckland City, missing the decisive matches against Benfica and Bayern Munich, which led to Boca’s early exit in the group stage.

The proposal came from Danubio's sporting director Gustavo Matosas, who posted on social media: “Where are you today, are you happy?”—a heartfelt plea inviting Cavani back to the Montevideo-based club. Cavani responded directly via his Instagram account: “Yes, I’m happy, and above all, stubborn. I’ll keep trying until the last day,” effectively dismissing any short-term return to Uruguay.
Boca out of the Club World Cup, but Cavani stays committed
Cavani also faced the media after Boca Juniors was eliminated from the Club World Cup. Speaking to DAZN, he expressed disappointment about the outcome but pointed to the team’s positives: “We saw some good things. We need to keep moving forward and improving,” he said, also thanking fans for their passionate support throughout the tournament.
His current stats paint a tough picture: just 13 appearances and two goals so far this year. Injuries and missed chances in key games—like the Copa Libertadores clash with Alianza Lima—have put his starting spot in question under manager Miguel Ángel Russo.
Despite all that, Cavani remains determined to continue with Boca Juniors. His firm response to Danubio shows not only his loyalty to the Argentine club, but also his drive to finish his career competing for titles and making an impact in one of South America’s most historic teams.
