De Zerbi Warns Greenwood Before PSG vs Marseille
De Zerbi decided to leave Greenwood on the bench for the last match against Lens due to his lack of commitment and attitude
The start of the season that Mason Greenwood had at the Velodrome sparked excitement at Olympique Marseille to try to challenge the unstoppable PSG for the Ligue 1 title. However, his form has faded as the season has progressed, and Roberto De Zerbi had no choice but to send him a warning before L’Classique.

De Zerbi, frustrated with Greenwood’s commitment
If one reviews Greenwood’s numbers, they don’t differ much from the start of the season. Since the beginning of 2025, he has been able to contribute to seven of the 21 goals Olympique Marseille has scored. However, his level during the course of matches has been quite inconsistent, and his attitude is starting to bother Roberto De Zerbi.
The Italian coach was the main supporter of Greenwood’s signing by Olympique Marseille, the fourth most expensive in the club’s history, only behind Vitinha, Payet, and Wahi. “When a player becomes my player, I am the first to corner him when he makes a mistake. But, to the outside world, I will always defend him like he’s my son,” said De Zerbi after his first match.
Will Greenwood play against PSG?
True to his word, with Greenwood being the third player at Olympique Marseille with the most minutes played this season, Roberto De Zerbi decided to leave Mason Greenwood on the bench for the first time this season after 27 matches. A decision that, however, didn’t go as he expected, as Marseille ended up losing to Lens.
However, despite the fact that De Zerbi brought Greenwood on at halftime, he didn’t back down from his decision and didn’t hesitate to send him a public message: “He’s too inconsistent, like the waves. And that’s something I don’t like. If someone trains badly, they won’t play, no matter what their name is.” We’ll see if Greenwood has learned the lesson and can play against PSG.
