Greenwood Lifts Marseille to Second Place and Seals Montpellier’s Relegation
Olympique de Marseille had a dream night at the Stade Vélodrome, securing a dominant 5-1 victory over bottom-of-the-table Montpellier in Matchday 34 of Ligue 1. With a stellar performance from Mason Greenwood, who scored twice, Roberto De Zerbi’s team took advantage of Monaco’s slip to climb to second place in the standings, just four matches away from the season’s end.
Greenwood shines and leads Marseille
The home side took control early. In the 8th minute, English striker Mason Greenwood converted a penalty after Cameroonian defender Wilfried Ndollo Bille fouled Swiss full-back Ulisses Garcia inside the box. Greenwood had already come close minutes earlier with a powerful shot that rattled the crossbar.
The narrow lead remained until the 60th minute, when Ndollo Bille, in a night to forget, scored an own goal to double the lead for Marseille. Shortly after, Greenwood struck again, completing his brace following an assist from Panamanian Michael Murillo. The former Getafe player now has 18 goals this season, placing him as the second-highest scorer in Ligue 1, just behind Ousmane Dembélé.

Marseille continued their dominance, and in the 74th minute, Jon Rowe added the fourth goal after a well-crafted team play. Montpellier managed a consolation goal through Lucas Miuncarelli, but in the final moments, Adrien Rabiot scored to round off the emphatic win.
Montpellier relegated to Ligue 2
This marks Montpellier’s 11th straight defeat, and with it, they are officially relegated to Ligue 2, sitting 14 points behind Reims, the last team above the drop zone, and 12 behind Le Havre, who currently occupy the relegation playoff spot. It has been a dismal campaign for the visitors, who were unable to turn their season around.
Meanwhile, Marseille now looks strong in their bid for a place in the Champions League, edging past Monaco by one point and emerging as one of the most in-form teams in the final stretch of the season. Greenwood’s role has been pivotal in keeping the dream alive for the southern French side.
