Greenwood Shines with a Brace as Marseille Secures Second Place in France
Olympique de Marseille wrapped up their Ligue 1 season with a dominant 4-2 win over Stade Rennes, securing second place in the league and a direct spot in next season’s Champions League. The night’s standout was Mason Greenwood, who scored twice and ended the campaign as joint top scorer of the French league alongside Ousmane Dembélé, both finishing with 21 goals.

The English forward, on loan from Manchester United, delivered a stellar performance in the season finale. He netted twice and came close to a hat trick, which would have given him the golden boot outright, but he missed a penalty that would have taken his tally to 22 goals. Still, his contribution was crucial for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, which also benefited from a brace by Adrien Rabiot to secure the win.
Meanwhile, Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain, who had led the scoring charts for much of the season, couldn’t add to his tally on the final matchday. Returning after three games out due to injury, he failed to score in PSG’s 3-1 win over Auxerre. The French attacker finished with 21 goals and six assists, matching Greenwood’s 21 goals and five assists.
Marseille’s strong finish, powered by Greenwood’s offensive firepower, allowed them to leapfrog Monaco in the standings and clinch second place. Monaco, already secure in third, were thrashed 4-0 by Lens and ended the season in third.
Nice, who crushed Brest 6-0, secured fourth place and the final Champions League spot, while Lille and Lyon qualified for the Europa League and Conference League, respectively.
With the season wrapped up, Mason Greenwood stands out as one of Ligue 1’s breakout stars. As his loan deal comes to an end, questions remain about his future—but Marseille is already dreaming of keeping hold of the new Ligue 1 top scorer.
