Angers vs Marseille highlights: seven goals and a Ligue 1 comeback

Olympique de Marseille came from behind to claim an impressive 5-2 victory over Angers in a thrilling Ligue 1 encounter featuring seven goals and plenty of memorable moments. The hosts struck first, but Marseille turned the match around before halftime and sealed the win with two late goals.

How Angers Comes Into the Match

Angers returns to Ligue 1 action looking to recover from a heavy 5-1 defeat against Brest in its most recent league appearance.

The team coached by Stéphane Gilli endured a difficult afternoon at Stade Francis-Le Blé, conceding four goals in the first half. Prosper Peter scored Angers' only goal shortly after halftime, before Jordan Lefort was sent off in the 59th minute.

The defeat brought an end to a promising run that included a 2-0 home victory over Troyes and a goalless draw against Le Havre.

With two victories, one draw, and three defeats from its opening six matches, Angers has collected seven points and remains in the lower half of the standings.

Returning to Stade Raymond Kopa, the hosts will look to deliver a stronger performance against an opponent that has also struggled for consistency.

How Marseille Comes Into the Match

Olympique de Marseille travels to Angers looking to build on its recent return to winning ways in Ligue 1, although its latest European result raised further concerns.

After suffering four consecutive league defeats, Bruno Génésio's team secured a much-needed 2-0 victory over Troyes on October 11.

Amine Harit opened the scoring early in the second half, while Himad Abdelli converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to secure Marseille's second league victory of the season.

However, the French club suffered another setback on October 15, losing 1-0 to Olympiacos at home in the UEFA Europa League. A first-half goal from Santiago Hezze condemned Marseille to its second defeat in as many European matches.

With six points from its first six Ligue 1 fixtures, Marseille will look to secure consecutive domestic victories for the first time this season before facing Sturm Graz in European competition on October 22.

Angers vs Marseille: A Chance to Climb the Ligue 1 Standings

Recent head-to-head meetings favor Marseille, which secured a convincing 5-2 victory over Angers at Stade Raymond Kopa on January 17, 2026.

Sunday's encounter will also be a special occasion for Himad Abdelli, who joined Marseille from Angers in February 2026. The Algerian midfielder returns to his former home stadium after scoring in Marseille's most recent league victory.

With just one point separating the clubs, the match represents an opportunity for both sides to move up the standings and gain confidence ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
