Monaco Snatches Second Place from Marseille in Ligue 1
Monaco secured a convincing 3-0 win over Marseille at the Stade Louis II, a result that lifted them into second place in the Ligue 1 standings on Matchday 29, in a season where Paris Saint-Germain has already been crowned champion.
The team led by Austrian coach Adi Hütter delivered a strong response after their previous setback and left no chance for a Marseille side that once again showed signs of inconsistency. The visitors, who had just broken a losing streak with a win over Toulouse, were overwhelmed and couldn’t maintain their momentum.
The first blow came just after the half-hour mark, when Japanese forward Takumi Minamino capitalized on an assist from Denis Zakaria to open the scoring. The goal shook Marseille, who struggled to recover and were outplayed across the pitch.
Second half dominance
The second half saw Monaco extend their control of the game. At the hour mark, Swiss striker Breel Embolo doubled the lead with a composed finish past Argentine keeper Gerónimo Rulli, following a great pass from Brazilian full-back Vanderson.
With the match firmly in their hands, Monaco managed the tempo and denied any serious threats from the opposition. The win was sealed ten minutes from time when Denis Zakaria calmly converted a penalty to make it 3-0.
With this victory, Monaco leapfrogs Marseille into second place, holding a one-point lead over their direct rivals. Although the gap with leaders PSG remains unbridgeable — 21 points — the team from the Principality strengthens its position in the race for European spots with a few games remaining.

Marseille, on the other hand, must refocus if they wish to secure a place in Europe, as a season full of ups and downs continues to cast doubt on their consistency.
