Lens looked to regain confidence against Lyon

Lens hosted Olympique Lyonnais at Stade Bollaert-Delelis in a match from the sixth round of Ligue 1. The home side needed to get back on track after four consecutive league games without a win, while Lyon aimed to maintain its strong start to the season.

From the opening minutes, Lens played with greater aggression and took the initiative. Lyon struggled to create danger and was forced to withstand the hosts' attacks as Lens looked to make the most of home advantage and deliver an important result in the league.

Florian Thauvin played a key role in Lens' victory

Lens' persistence paid off thanks to Florian Thauvin, who played a direct role in both goals. First, the winger set up Florian Sotoca, 35, who took his opportunity to open the scoring. Later, Thauvin delivered another dangerous ball that Matthieu Udol headed home to make it 2-0.

Lyon struggled to find a response and appeared headed for its first defeat of the campaign. However, just when Lens seemed to have the match under control, one incident completely changed the situation and turned the closing minutes into a nerve-racking test for the home side.

A red card and a goal gave Lyon hope

The turning point came when Matthieu Udol was sent off for a challenge on Khalis Merah. Lens was reduced to ten men and lost some of the control it had established throughout the match.

Shortly afterward, Merah pulled one back for Lyon, setting off alarm bells among the home supporters. With a numerical advantage, the visitors pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Lens held firm and managed to protect its lead until the final whistle.

Lens stops Lyon and climbs the Ligue 1 standings

Lens defeated Lyon 2-1, ending a run of four consecutive league matches without a win. The result also brought Lyon's unbeaten run to an end, with the visitors having arrived for the match among the top teams in the standings.

With the victory, Lens moved to seven points and seventh place, while Lyon remained second with 11 points. For the hosts, the win provides a significant confidence boost. For Paulo Fonseca's side, it serves as a wake-up call after a match in which its response came too late.
