Thiago Almada Bids Farewell to Botafogo and Announces his New Club
Thiago Almada, the Argentine midfielder and World Cup champion, has confirmed his transfer to Olympique Lyon after his brief stint at Botafogo in Brazil. In an interview with Cazé TV, the 23-year-old shared his decision to leave the Rio-based club after winning two major titles: the Copa Libertadores and Brasileirão. Despite his short time in Brazil, Almada expressed his gratitude for the support he received. "This group will be an important part of my career. It's like a family, and I'll always carry them in my heart," he said.
A step towards Europe
Almada made it clear that his time at Botafogo was always meant to be a stepping stone to Europe. "When I arrived, everything was already set for me to stay six months and then go to Lyon. I think it's going to happen," said the midfielder, who’s excited for his upcoming adventure in Ligue 1. Olympique Lyon, currently going through a tough time, will be his next destination, where Almada will join his fellow Argentines Nicolás Tagliafico and, if he doesn't move, Lautaro Martínez.
Almada's transfer was expected ever since he left Atlanta United last year. His arrival at Botafogo was part of a long-term strategy by the Eagle Group, which owns both clubs. "Thiago was brought in to join us at Eagle with the goal of helping Botafogo win titles before heading to Europe," explained John Textor, the group’s owner. With 26 appearances and a standout performance, Almada leaves Brazil with an unforgettable legacy.
