Greenwood Shines in Marseille’s Rout and Threatens Real Madrid in the Champions League
Olympique de Marseille will arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu with one name that worries Real Madrid: Mason Greenwood. The English forward starred in a 4-0 win over Lorient, scoring once and providing an assist, confirming his excellent start to the Ligue 1 season.
Greenwood, Marseille’s standout star
The team led by Roberto De Zerbi needed to regain confidence after a shaky start with two defeats and one win from their opening three matches. The clash against relegation-threatened Lorient looked favorable, especially when Darlin Yongwa was sent off in the 10th minute for a penalty foul on Michael Murillo.
From the spot, Greenwood made no mistake, giving Marseille the lead with a clinical finish. The Englishman became the driving force of his side’s attack, constantly creating danger and playing a key role in multiple chances. His quality was again on display in the second goal, when he provided the assist for Benjamin Pavard, who doubled the advantage with a header.

Before halftime, Angel Gomes scored the third, and late in the game Nayef Aguerd sealed the rout with the final 4-0. The victory calmed tensions in Marseille and confirmed Greenwood’s great form, with two goals and three assists in just four league games.
A player Real Madrid must watch
Real Madrid, still unbeaten in LaLiga EA Sports, will host Marseille in their Champions League opener. For Xabi Alonso, the focus will be on stopping Greenwood, who has quickly become the French side’s main attacking reference.
The former Getafe forward has proven decisive, and his presence poses a real challenge for the Madrid defense. Even without key players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, or Arthur Vermeeren, Marseille produced a convincing win that boosts their morale ahead of the Bernabéu trip.
Tuesday’s clash will be a true test for both Greenwood and Real Madrid, as the Spanish giants must show their defensive solidity against a striker who arrives inspired and hungry to shine on Europe’s biggest stage.
