Paulo Fonseca under pressure at Lyon vs. Le Havre after Champions League fail

Once is unfortunate. Two is a problem.

That’s the immediate issue facing Lyon coach, Paulo Fonseca, whose team has now missed two occasions to qualify for this season’s Champions League group stages. This has become an expensive mistake for both Lyon and the Portuguese manager who is already under pressure at the start of the season.

The first slip up for Fonseca was at the end of the last season when Lyon lost its final two clutch league games. Two points was the difference in the end between finishing third and making it into the Champions League group stages straight away, or ending up in fourth and having to qualify.

The qualification process was the second fail with Lyon losing 3-2 on aggregate to Fenerbahce to end up in the UEFA Europe League while last season’s third-place team, Lille, will face Bayern Munich and Arsenal.

Lyon look for a response in Ligue 1

Lyon need to bounce back swiftly on Saturday on beIN SPORTS and build on last weekend’s Ligue 1 season-opening win at Toulouse. Lyon is back at home and facing a Le Havre side which lost its first match to Monaco. While missing out on the Champions League will be a longstanding disappointment for home fans, a solid run for Lyon in Ligue 1 might begin to make amends.
