Houston Dynamo v Seattle Sounders: Schmetzer credits whole club after confidence-boosting victory
After an emphatic win over St. Louis City last time out, Seattle Sounders take on Houston Dynamo on Saturday.
Brian Schmetzer was full of praise for the entire Seattle Sounders organisation after his side’s emphatic 4-1 win over St. Louis City FC last weekend.
Albert Rusnak, Obed Vargas, Danny Musovski and Nouhou Tolo all found the net as Seattle extended their MLS home unbeaten streak to 10 matches.
Marcel Hartel opened the scoring for St. Louis with a spot-kick just before the half-hour mark, but Rusnak replied in kind with a penalty of his own before Vargas and Musovski scored in the second half to put Seattle comfortably ahead at Lumen Field.
But the star of the second half was midfielder Ryan Kent, who supplied two assists to put his side in the driver’s seat.
Tolo added further gloss in stoppage time, comfortably wrapping up Schmetzer's 150th MLS victory as Seattle boss.
The Sounders fired off 29 shots in all against St. Louis – the highest single-game total by any team in MLS this season.
Speaking after the match, Schmetzer credited the entire club for the result.
“There was a lot, a lot of attacking quality in the attacking third. I actually really enjoyed watching that game,” Schmetzer said.
“In the locker room, I credited the entire Sounders organisation [for this win].
“It's not just the players that started, the players that came on. It's the support staff. It's the injured guys that were there supporting their teammates. It's everyone involved.
“This was a good night to be a Seattle Sounder.”
Seattle moved up to seventh in the Western Conference standings with 16 points, just three points off Minnesota United in second place.
Houston Dyanmo, meanwhile, slumped to a discouraging 2-0 loss to LAFC on Saturday, with Nathan Ordaz and Jeremy Ebobisse on target.
A frustrating display from Ben Olsen’s side saw them fail to attempt a single shot on target in the match for the first time since facing Saturday’s opponents Seattle back in October 2024.
The night went from bad to worse for the Dynamo when Franco Escobar was sent off in the fifth minute of stoppage time for picking up his second yellow card.
Houston currently sit 14th in the Western Conference standings, level on 10 points with St. Louis and Sporting Kansas City.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Houston Dynamo – Ondrej Lingr
Houston mustered just four shots, none on target, in their defeat to LAFC on Saturday, though Ondrej Lingr was a rare bright spot.
The Czech forward has now scored twice in three MLS appearances and looks key to any hopes Houston have of turning things around. He led the team with an individual xG of 0.16 in the loss, offering a glimpse of attacking intent in an otherwise stale performance.
Seattle Sounders – Danny Musovksi
Musovksi has scored in four straight matches for the first time in his career and is the first Sounders player to score in four straight matches since Raul Ruidiaz in 2019.
The last Sounders player to score in five straight games within a single season was Obafemi Martins in 2015.
MATCH PREDICTION: HOUSTON DYNAMO WIN
Despite their current run of form, Houston are pegged as favourites ahead of Saturday’s clash. The Dynamo have won just two of their first 11 regular-season matches in 2025 (D4 L5). However, both of those wins came at home, and they will be expected to make home advantage count once again against Seattle.
Seattle, though, have a favourable record to look back on. They have lost only two of their last 25 meetings with Houston in all competitions (W15 D8) dating back to 2014. Four of the last five meetings, including the last three in a row, however, have ended in draws.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
Houston Dynamo – 41.9%
Draw – 26.7%
Seattle Sounders – 31.5%
