New England Revolution v New York Red Bulls: Forsberg savouring strong start
Emil Forsberg has shone for the New York Red Bulls so far this season, leading them on a four-match unbeaten run in MLS.
Emil Forsberg has put the New York Red Bulls' impressive start to 2025 down to the chemistry built by coach Sandro Schwarz, as they prepare to visit Foxborough for a meeting with the New England Revolution.
The Red Bulls made the playoffs in their first campaign under Schwarz in 2024, and though they began 2025 with a defeat to FC Cincinnati, they swiftly turned things around.
A four-match unbeaten run has them seventh in the Eastern Conference ahead of their visit to New England, who are third from bottom with a solitary point.
Former RB Leipzig star Forsberg, who scored twice in a 2-1 over Toronto FC last weekend, says the spirit in the New York camp can push them on to greater heights.
"The chemistry in the team is fantastic," Forsberg said. "We are having fun together, working hard, and pushing to improve every game.
"After last season, we knew we had to do more, and I think we are doing that. Every game, every day, we are getting better, especially in the attacking half.
"Our second goal [against Toronto] – one or two quick touches and getting in behind – was the kind of play we are working towards. It looks promising, and I feel great."
Reflecting on the Red Bulls' most recent win, Schwarz praised Forsberg's work in and out of possession and said the Swede leads by example on the training ground.
"We have seen the whole quality of Emil," Schwarz said. "First of all, in our pressing behaviour, he's working so hard and he's attacking the opponent, and as a leader, he wants the ball in every situation.
"It's great to see him every day in our facility, in our training sessions, in our locker room, and then to see him on matchdays."
The Revs are currently on a three-game losing streak, having gone down by a 2-1 scoreline against New York City FC in their last match on March 15.
"We have to keep fighting and we have to win the next game. It's that simple," under-fire coach Caleb Porter said.
"It was good to have a couple of weeks just to work on some things and make sure we have the right guys in the lineup in this game, guys that are going to fight."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New England Revolution – Carles Gil
New England have attempted 53.3% of their shots this season from outside the box, the highest percentage in MLS in 2025, but they have hit the target with just 6.3% of those efforts, the lowest shooting accuracy from outside the box of any team.
No Revs player has created more than four chances this season, with Gil level with Ignatius Ganago at the top of their charts. More creativity is needed from the hosts.
New York Red Bulls – Emil Forsberg
Forsberg scored his third brace in his 24th regular-season game for the Red Bulls in their most recent outing.
Forsberg is the seventh player in Red Bulls history, and the first since Bradley Wright-Phillips in 2014, to record three multi-goal games before his 25th appearance for the club.
MATCH PREDICTION – NEW YORK RED BULLS WIN
After opening the season with a loss, New York have collected eight points from their last four matches (W2 D2).
That is more than they managed in their final nine regular-season matches entering last year's playoffs (six).
Meanwhile, after losing their first four games in 2024, New England have just one point through four matches this campaign. The Revs are the first team in MLS history to have fewer than two points through four matches in consecutive seasons.
The Revs have 27 wins in 42 all-time home matches against the Red Bulls in regular-season MLS play (including one breakaway shootout win), but they enter this one as outsiders.
