New York City FC v Orlando City: Hosts to use 'emotion' of anniversary match
Ten years on from their first MLS meeting as expansion franchises, New York City FC host Orlando City on Saturday.
New York City FC are ready to play on the emotion of their 10th anniversary match against Orlando City on Saturday.
NYCFC's first home game of the campaign reunites them with the opponents in their very first MLS match 10 years ago.
Both NYCFC and Orlando were new to the league in 2015, playing out a 1-1 draw in Florida.
Although the teams have changed since then, there is anticipation of a "big night" this weekend.
"It's going to be a very big night," said City coach Pascal Jansen. "I was told it's the 10th anniversary, and the game back then was also against Orlando, so emotions will be there. It's a big night."
Jansen added: "The guys are really anxious to prove themselves again. The fact that it's going to be Orlando again puts a lot of emotions there as well.
"One of my coaches, Mehdi [Ballouchy], has also played in that game, so he knows how that feels, and we're going to use that emotion to prepare ourselves to be ready for this game."
NYCFC are still waiting for their first win of the season after drawing with 10-man Inter Miami and losing narrowly to Los Angeles FC.
"We were close to getting good results in the away games, but not good enough," Jansen said. "So hopefully now, with the homecoming — the home opener with the fans there — we'll do much better.
"I know the guys are looking forward to it, so all together, I'm hoping for a good match."
Orlando lost their opening game 4-2 to the Philadelphia Union but then won by the same scoreline against Toronto FC.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New York City FC — Maxi Moralez
Moralez is now 38, but the diminutive midfielder remains a key cog for NYCFC and has a history of performing in this fixture.
Indeed, he has more goals against Orlando than against any other MLS side, netting five times in 13 matches across two spells with NYCFC.
Orlando City — Cesar Araujo
Araujo is not known for his attacking contributions, but he tallied a goal and an assist against Toronto, in one game almost matching last season's three goal involvements.
Orlando will hope for more of the same against NYCFC, although Araujo will also be busy keeping Moralez in check.
MATCH PREDICTION: NYCFC WIN
NYCFC may be winless, but that will cause little concern. This side are traditionally slow starts, failing to win either of their opening two matches six times in the past seven seasons, now including four in a row.
City also have a strong record at home to Orlando, winning six of their past seven such meetings and drawing the other.
In fact, Orlando have not won at NYCFC since 2017. Moralez played in that game, which saw David Villa score for the hosts and Cyle Larin net a double for the visitors.
