No Punishment Coming: MLS Clears Messi After Inter Miami Season-Opening Controversy
A viral video sparked controversy after Inter Miami’s season opener. The league has now delivered its official verdict.
The League’s Official Review
MLS has officially put an end to speculation surrounding Lionel Messi following Inter Miami’s season opener against LAFC. After conducting an internal review, the league determined that the Argentine did not violate any league policy.
A video circulating on social media appeared to show Messi approaching what some believed was the referees’ locker room area. The footage quickly fueled debate about a possible unauthorized entry into a restricted space.
What Actually Happened
According to MLS and the Professional Referee Organization (PRO), the area in question was not the referees’ locker room nor a restricted zone.
League officials confirmed that Messi did not enter any official referee facilities. As a result, no disciplinary breach occurred and no formal investigation was opened against the Inter Miami star.
PRO Backs the Argentine Star
Chris Rivett, communications director for PRO, clarified the situation after speaking directly with the match officials. He confirmed that Messi never entered the referees’ locker room.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano also stated after the match that he was unaware of any such incident, explaining that he went straight to the locker room once the game ended.
No Report, No Sanction
MLS further confirmed that the referees did not file any official report regarding Messi. Without a formal complaint, the matter is considered closed.
The controversy emerged after Inter Miami’s loss to LAFC at the LA Memorial Coliseum, but the fallout will remain limited to social media speculation.
The final verdict is clear: no violation, no misconduct, and no punishment. Lionel Messi has officially been cleared by MLS.
