St. Louis City fighting for 'special things' amid 'crazy' run

  • St. Louis City SC are on a 20-game unbeaten run, and next up is a top-of-the-standings contest against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

St. Louis City SC are out to achieve "special things" amid their ongoing unbeaten streak, so says Rafael Navarro.

St. Louis City made it 20 games without a defeat in all competitions when they hammered the LA Galaxy 6-2 on Sunday.

Their run stretches back to May and matches the all-time record for an MLS team, previously set by the New York Red Bulls in 2016.

They have now gone 18 league matches without a defeat. The MLS record is 19 (set by FC Dallas in 2004).

And Navarro, who has already netted seven goals in six games for St. Louis, believes the sky is the limit.

"For me, it's crazy. A 20-game unbeaten streak is just a crazy thought," said Navarro.

"We're fighting for special things here. We're fighting for trophies. So I think you know if we can keep going in this way, I think good things will happen.

"I feel right at home. The staff, the players, they have welcomed me with open arms since the beginning.

"I've felt very good since the beginning here, and I think it shows on the field, on the training grounds."

Next up is a crucial clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps, who sit one point clear of St. Louis in the Western Conference.

"All the credit goes to the players, showing that level of consistency and the way they've worked, the way they've reflected on each game, and the way they showed up the next one. It's been outstanding," St. Louis coach Yoann Damet said.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

St. Louis City SC – Carlo Holse

Navarro netted twice against the Galaxy, but Holse scored a hat-trick inside the opening 21 minutes.

It was the second-fastest hat-trick in MLS history from the start of a game. He also became the fifth player in the competition to net a hat-trick inside the opening 30 minutes of a match.

Vancouver Whitecaps – Brian White

White is the Whitecaps' leading scorer this season in MLS, with 17 goals.

He had three attempts against Los Angeles FC last time out, though he failed to hit the target with two of them.

White has scored eight goals in seven career regular-season matches against St. Louis. The only player to score more goals against any single opponent since St. Louis joined MLS in 2023 is Denis Bouanga (nine v the LA Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes).

MATCH PREDICTION: ST. LOUIS CITY SC WIN

The Whitecaps, who earned a 1-1 draw at Los Angeles FC on Saturday, have lost only three away matches this season (W6 D4).

The only previous season in which the Whitecaps lost fewer than five away matches was last year when they suffered just four road defeats.

St. Louis ended a five-match winless run against Vancouver with a 3-1 road win on September 5.

It was the fifth time in seven all-time meetings that there were at least four goals scored as at least one team has scored three or more goals in six of the seven matches.
