Why Might Lionel Messi Miss the MLS vs Liga MX All-Star Game?
The league’s biggest star has yet to appear in training ahead of the clash vs. Liga MX. Lionel Messi may not feature in the highly anticipated MLS All-Star Game against Liga MX, scheduled for Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas (8:00 p.m. local / 01:00 GMT). Despite being included in the official roster, the Inter Miami star has yet to show up for any of the team’s activities this week, sparking growing doubts about his participation.
Why Is His Absence from Training a Concern?
Messi missed both Monday and Tuesday’s training sessions, raising eyebrows among fans and media. He and fellow Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba were also absent from the skills challenge and team events. When asked about the situation, MLS All-Star head coach Nico Estévez deflected the question:
“Regarding Leo, that’s something for the league or his club to answer. I just coach the players I’m given.”
Although Estévez admitted he hopes Messi will play, he offered no confirmation, further fueling speculation.
Could Messi Be Suspended If He Doesn't Play?
MLS has a precedent of suspending players who skip the All-Star Game without medical justification. For example, Zlatan Ibrahimović received a one-match suspension in 2018 for skipping the event. If Messi is not injured and doesn’t show up, he risks missing a league match.
Meanwhile, James Rodríguez (León) has already been ruled out for Liga MX, while Sergio Ramos was confirmed as the Mexican side’s captain by Mikel Arriola.
Is Messi Prioritizing Rest?
In a recent interview, Javier Mascherano made a comment that now seems particularly relevant:
“I’d rather have Leo rest than see him running around in a friendly…”
Messi has played numerous matches this summer under intense heat and humidity across the United States. While fans were eager to see him in the All-Star spotlight, the Argentine might simply be prioritizing his physical well-being over a showcase event—even if it comes at a cost.
