Big Win for Widzew, Motor Rout Wisła
It was a balanced Ekstraklasa round with Raków extending their winning run, Widzew climbing out of the relegation zone, Motor registering a historic win and Jagiellonia's yet another dramatic finish against Pogoń.
20 goals were scored in nine games (2.22g/game) with three home wins, three away and 3 draws.
Raków Częstochowa - thanks to a bicycle goal by Lamine Diaby-Fadiga - secured a 3rd straight win and are now level on points with Górnik Zabrze (disappointing loss at home to Zagłębie Lubin) and Jagiellonia Białystok.
Wisła Płock lost their 3rd consecutive match without scoring, falling 0:4 to Motor Lublin, who were inspired by Rafał Wolski (1g/2a) while Karol Czubak netted his 17th of the season. It was Motor’s biggest ever Ekstraklasa away win.
Bergier and Adamski (again!) to the rescue
Legia Warszawa and Widzew Łódź, both recently in the relegation zone, continued their resurgence after coaching changes. Last week’s crucial victories allowed them - for the first time since Round 17 - to find themselves above the danger zone. Widzew dispatched Lechia Gdańsk 3:1 thanks to a double by Sebastian Bergier (13&14th of the season) and Legia were again rescued by Rafał Adamski. Remarkably it was the third game-winner in the last four games for the 24-year old, who a short time ago played in a lower division in Poland.
Goalfest in Białystok
In the first part of the season the game between Pogoń Szczecin and Jagiellonia Białystok was probably the best of all. Pogoń had their best free-flowing attack on display and 27 total attempts (9 on target), but at the end it was the visitors who stole a 2:1 victory thanks to Oskar Pietuszewski’s strike in injury time. The rematch was equally good and dramatic. Jaga went up 2:0 (a wonder-goal by Kajetan Szmyt and a 13th of the season for Afimico Pululu), but Pogoń found a way to equalize in the 83rd minute. The Pride of Podlasie once more fought till the end and a goal by Bernardo Vital gave them a thrilling 3:2 win.
Key Storylines for Round 33: Lech Champions?
After a disappointing 1:1 at home against Arka Gdynia Lech Poznań will travel to Radom looking for 3 points that would secure their 10th overall and 2nd consecutive title. So far this campaign they have thrived away from home (8W-5T-3L), but - since Radomiak own the second best home record (9W-4T-3L) - it will be a stern test.
In Katowice GKS head into their clash with Jagiellonia looking to climb above the Białystok side on the podium. Meanwhile in Kielce Korona face Widzew in a crucial relegation battle between two sides separated by a single goal. Similarly Arka need a victory against already demoted Termalica to stay alive.
