Is Ángel Di María retiring? The Argentine confirms his departure from Benfica
Argentine forward Ángel Di María has officially announced his departure from Benfica, the club he rejoined in 2023 after a stint at Juventus. Through an emotional message on social media, the former Real Madrid player hinted that the recent league match in the Portuguese Liga was his final league appearance in the team's jersey.
In his post, Di María acknowledged that they fell short of winning the league title, which ultimately went to Sporting Lisbon. "It was a very long year, with a lot of effort and hard work. It hurts not to have achieved our goal, but I’m proud to have worn this jersey again," said the Argentine, who accompanied his message with a photo waving to the fans at Estádio da Luz.
A farewell to football?
At 37, the Rosario-born player is nearing the end of his career, although he has not yet officially confirmed his retirement from professional football. What is certain is that this Sunday he could play his final match with the Eagles, in the Portuguese Cup final, once again against Sporting. "We’re going all out to win it. Thank you for the unwavering support, Benfiquistas," he added.
This past season, Di María had an uneven campaign, partly due to injuries that kept him out of several matches. Still, his quality shone through in key moments, proving that his talent remains intact despite the years.

The Argentine star boasts a decorated career: he won the Champions League with Real Madrid, secured five Ligue 1 titles with PSG, a LaLiga title, a Portuguese league title, as well as an Olympic gold medal, and the coveted 2022 World Cup with the Argentina national team.
From his early days at Rosario Central, to playing for clubs like Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Juventus, Ángel Di María has left an indelible mark on world football. Now, the football world watches closely to see what’s next in his journey: will he continue playing or hang up his boots after the Portuguese Cup final?
