Arne Slot Hopes Mohamed Salah Will Stay
After the thrilling draw against Newcastle, Liverpool’s manager sent an indirect message to the club’s board urging them to extend the contract of their Egyptian forward, who shone with a brace.
Who can stop Mohamed Salah? At the moment, that question has no answer for Premier League defenses. Even though Liverpool drew in a thrilling match against Newcastle (3-3), the Egyptian was once again the standout player in the Reds’ attack. After a quiet first 50 minutes, Salah delivered an extraordinary final half-hour. First, he assisted Curtis Jones to make it 1-1, then scored a brace: equalizing at 2-2 in the 68th minute and putting Liverpool ahead 3-2 in the 83rd.
"Delivering half an hour with an assist, two goals, a shot off the crossbar, and being a constant threat is something very few players can do," acknowledged Arne Slot in a press conference, shortly after telling Amazon Prime: "Every time we need him, Mo Salah scores a goal." With this brace, the Egyptian has now scored in seven consecutive league games, a feat only two other players have achieved before in the Premier League: Jamie Vardy and Ruud van Nistelrooy. This season, Salah has tallied 13 goals and 8 assists, having been decisive in 12 of the 14 matches played.
Slot is not surprised
Salah’s incredible form has been pivotal to Liverpool’s strong start to the season, as they sit firmly at the top of the league with a seven-point lead over their closest rivals, Chelsea and Arsenal. However, his performance doesn’t surprise his Dutch manager. "What I noticed from the beginning, when he arrived [in pre-season], was how fit and ready he was to have a great season (...) So it doesn’t surprise me at all that he’s doing so well so far," explained Arne Slot.
Thrilled with the commitment and impact of his star forward—who has contributed to 327 goals (226 goals and 101 assists) in 370 games since joining Liverpool in 2017—the former Feyenoord coach expressed his desire to keep the 32-year-old in the team for a long time. "We hope and wish he stays with us for a long time. He had an extraordinary second half and has done so many incredible things for us," he said, sending a clear message to the board as Mohamed Salah’s contract is set to expire on June 30.
Although Salah has recently voiced his concerns about his contract situation, it appears that Liverpool is already taking action. Reports suggest the club has made an initial renewal offer to Virgil van Dijk, another key player whose contract is also nearing its end, and is preparing to do the same for Salah. In the meantime, the Egyptian forward remains focused on the pitch, leaving opposing defenses without answers to his remarkable form.
