Arsenal Loses Lead and Falls Further Behind in The Premier League after Draw with Aston Villa
Arsenal squandered a 2-0 lead and ended up drawing 2-2 with Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium, further complicating their Premier League title hopes. The Gunners are now six points behind leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.
Mikel Arteta's team took the lead with goals from Gabriel Martinelli in the 35th minute and Kai Havertz in the 55th, both set up by the brilliance of Leandro Trossard. However, a lapse in concentration between the 60th and 68th minutes allowed Villa to equalize with strikes from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins.
The draw could have been even worse for the hosts, as Aston Villa created clear chances to take the lead, including a shot from Lamare Bogarde that David Raya managed to save. Arsenal thought they had regained the lead late on with a goal from Havertz, but the VAR disallowed it for a handball by the German.
The London side controlled much of the game but faltered under pressure in the final stages. Trossard missed a one-on-one chance in the dying moments, letting slip the last opportunity to secure a victory.
Meanwhile, Liverpool defeated Brentford with a stoppage-time winner from Darwin Núñez, extending their lead at the top of the table. Arsenal's chances of staying in the title race now rely heavily on Liverpool slipping up.
With this draw, Aston Villa remains seventh in the standings, just one point off the Conference League spots and two away from the Champions League places. It was a result celebrated by the visitors, while the Gunners were left to rue another missed opportunity.
