Guardiola's Reaction to Haaland's Renewal
Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, assured that Erling Haaland will not relax after signing a new contract and highlighted that the striker is a fierce competitor with the potential to break the Premier League's all-time scoring record.
The Norwegian forward has extended his contract with City until 2034, adding seven years to his current deal, which was set to expire in 2027. This new agreement would keep him at the club until he is 34, putting him on track to surpass Alan Shearer's record of 260 goals. Haaland currently has 79 goals in the English competition.
"If he keeps these numbers, yes (he will break it). It will depend on him and the team, but this is exceptional news for the club," Guardiola said during a press conference on Friday. He also highlighted that the renewal reflects the mutual trust between the player and the institution.
Guardiola dismissed any concerns that Haaland might lower his level of commitment now that his future is secured. "I don’t have the feeling he’ll take it easy just because he signed this contract. He’s a great competitor. He loves the club, the people around him, the Premier League, and living here with his family. I imagine he feels there’s no better place for him over the next ten years," he stated.
The Catalan coach emphasized that at just 23 years old, Haaland still has plenty of room to grow. "He’s still young, and with the maturity that comes from playing more games, he’ll get even better," Guardiola added. This contract extension not only secures City’s long-term strength but also solidifies Haaland’s status as one of the most outstanding and ambitious players in modern football.
