Mohamed Salah wins Premier League MVP and now sets his sights on the Ballon d'Or
Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, from Liverpool, has been named the best player of the 2024/25 Premier League season, becoming the fifth footballer in history to win this award more than once.
A place among the greats
Salah, who had already received the award in the 2017/18 campaign, now joins legends such as Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, and Kevin De Bruyne. Next season, he’ll aim to make history as the first to win it three times. His impact was key in helping Liverpool win the league title, recording 28 goals and 18 assists so far, just two short of the combined record held by Henry and De Bruyne.
At 32 years old, Salah is already the third all-time top scorer in Liverpool history with 244 goals, and fifth in the all-time Premier League rankings with 185 goals. Only Alan Shearer (260), Harry Kane (213), Wayne Rooney (208), and Andy Cole (187) are ahead of him. He also became the foreign player with the most goals in the English league, surpassing the 184 scored by Argentine Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero.
Public vote and the end of an era
The award was given following a combined vote from the public and a panel of experts. Salah topped a list that also included his teammates Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch, along with players like Morgan Gibbs-White, Alexander Isak, Bryan Mbeumo, Declan Rice, and Chris Wood.
With this win, the Egyptian breaks a streak of five straight seasons in which a Manchester City player won the award — including Kevin De Bruyne (2), Rúben Dias, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden. Now, with his eyes on the Ballon d’Or, Salah aims to continue writing his legacy among football’s all-time greats.
