Premier League Dismisses Referee David Coote Who Insulted Klopp
The Premier League’s Referees' Association (PGMOL) announced the immediate dismissal of David Coote on Monday following a series of controversies. These include allegations of insulting Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, alleged substance abuse during the Euro 2020, and an ongoing investigation into a possible match-fixing incident in 2019.
"Unacceptable Conduct," Says PGMOL
In an official statement, the PGMOL said:
"After concluding the investigation into Coote's conduct, his role in the Premier League has been terminated with immediate effect. Coote's actions represent a serious breach of his contract."
The organization added that Coote has the right to appeal the decision and will receive support to ensure his personal well-being.
The Scandals Behind the Dismissal
Coote was recorded referring to then-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as a “German arrogant a***ole”. This incident, which surfaced weeks ago, drew strong backlash from the club and its fans, further tarnishing Coote’s reputation.
British media released footage showing Coote allegedly snorting a white powder, reportedly cocaine, the day after serving as a VAR assistant referee during a Euro 2020 match. The video fueled further scrutiny of his off-field behavior.
According to reports by The Sun, Coote is under investigation by the FA for allegedly aiding a friend in a betting scheme. The referee is accused of deliberately booking Leeds United player Ezgjan Alioski in 2019 to secure a bet. After the match, Coote reportedly sent a message saying, “I hope you placed the bet as we discussed.”
