Amid the crisis, Tottenham targets two goalkeepers
Amid the ongoing goalkeeping crisis at Tottenham, the club has already set its sights on two shot-stoppers. One of them is the new German jewel between the posts, a goalkeeper who is already being compared to Manuel Neuer.
The main issue for Spurs is that Guglielmo Vicario could leave in the summer for Inter. In addition, the backup goalkeeper, Antonín Kinský, has failed to convince the club after his unfortunate performance against Atlético de Madrid in the Champions League.
That leaves the team with American goalkeeper Brandon Austin, who has only played one league match and still lacks the experience needed to take on the starting role for Tottenham next season.
Market options and the “new Neuer”
This situation opens the door for the London club to strengthen the position with two goalkeepers. Among the options are Dean Henderson from Crystal Palace and James Trafford from Manchester City. However, the name drawing the most attention is the “new Neuer”: young German keeper Noah Atubolu from Freiburg.
Atubolu is Tottenham’s main target. The German goalkeeper has become a sensation in his country thanks to a playing style reminiscent of the Bayern Munich shot-stopper. He stands out for his ability with the ball at his feet, his long distribution, and his penalty-saving skills. In fact, he holds the record of five consecutive penalties saved in the Bundesliga.
Moreover, signing the German could be an affordable move for Tottenham. He is under contract until 2027 and, reportedly, Freiburg would be open to negotiating his departure. His price tag is expected to be around €20 million, a figure that could even be adjusted in negotiations.
The other goalkeeper of interest, James Trafford, would cost around £35 million. He is a goalkeeper with a profile more similar to Vicario: composed, reliable, and very secure between the posts.
Both are young goalkeepers with different styles, but they could compete and even rotate as starters across the various competitions the London side is involved in.
For now, Tottenham is focused on overcoming its current slump and avoiding further complications in the standings—something that will also be key in attracting players like Atubolu, who would hardly be eager to join a team far from the top spots. If Spurs fail to turn things around, they may need to explore other alternatives for the position, as the German is also being monitored by other clubs that could offer European competition.
The future of Tottenham’s goalkeeping situation remains uncertain, but before thinking about reinforcements, the club must stabilize its project and get back on track.
