Arsenal Could Be Forced to Sacrifice One of Their Stars This Summer
Arsenal are enjoying a fantastic season, but behind the scenes the club could soon face some difficult decisions.
Arsenal’s strong season under Arteta
Arsenal are enjoying one of their most impressive seasons in recent years under Mikel Arteta. The North London side currently leads the Premier League by seven points ahead of Manchester City and remains competitive in several major competitions.
The Gunners have also reached the Champions League round of 16, will play in the EFL Cup final, and are still alive in the FA Cup.
On the pitch, everything appears to be going perfectly for Arsenal. However, behind the sporting success lies a financial reality that could force the club into making difficult decisions in the upcoming transfer window.
Recent spending creates financial pressure
According to The Telegraph, Arsenal spent more than €300 million during the last financial year. That level of spending means the club must now balance its accounts to comply with the financial regulations of both the Premier League and UEFA.
As a result, the club could be forced to make significant player sales during the summer transfer window.
One of the names mentioned in that scenario is Martin Ødegaard, the current team captain. The Norwegian midfielder still has two years left on his contract, which means he retains a high market value and could generate a substantial financial return if a strong offer arrives.
Other players who could leave
Besides Ødegaard, several other players have also been mentioned as potential departures if the club decides to raise funds.
Among them are Gabriel Martinelli and Ben White, who originally joined the club for €7 million and €58 million, respectively. Their transfers could bring in significant income.
Kai Havertz has also been linked to possible movement, although Arsenal would reportedly only consider selling him if a major offer arrives. Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard will both enter the final year of their contracts at the end of the season.
Young talents and major investments
Even academy prospects like Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri could become valuable assets in the transfer market, since any sale would represent pure profit for the club.
The financial pressure is also linked to Arsenal’s recent investments. Last summer the club signed Eberechi Eze for €69 million and Viktor Gyökeres for €66 million.
In addition, the Gunners have committed to making the signing of Piero Hincapié permanent, which will require another €52 million investment.
With so many recent transfers and losses recorded in the previous financial year, Arsenal must now stabilize their finances. And if that means sacrificing one of their stars, the club could be forced to make that decision this summer.
