Big Aston Villa fan, Ozzy Osbourne died at 76
The world of music and football is in mourning. It was just confirmed that the legendary Ozzy Osbourne has passed away at the age of 76. What many may not know is that the iconic Black Sabbath frontman was a huge fan of Aston Villa, a historic club in the Premier League.
Just a year ago, Aston Villa unveiled their 2024/25 kit through a special video featuring none other than Ozzy Osbourneand Geezer Butler, the band’s bassist. Joining them was Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez, Argentina’s national team goalkeeper, who also appeared in the fun promo clip.
The “Prince of Darkness” showed his love for the club he cherished
Both Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler, founding members of Black Sabbath, surprised fans by starring in the club’s official kit launch. The connection between the band and the team runs deep, as both were born in the city of Birmingham a working-class hub with a rich cultural history.
From their formation in 1968 to several reunion tours, Black Sabbath proudly represented Birmingham across the globe, just as Aston Villa has done on the football pitch.
A memorable performance by Ozzy
The promo video kicks off with a phone call between the two musicians. “Oi, Geezer!” says Osbourne. “You alright, Ozz?” replies Butler. Ozzy then says, “We’re playing at Villa Park!” to which Geezer answers, “Only if I can play left wing!” a nod to his political views. At that moment, the iconic track “Paranoid” begins to play.
Dibu Martínez also made a cameo. In the locker room, the Argentine keeper wonders who his “new teammate” is. Enter Ozzy, dressed and ready to hit the pitch, claiming he can “play in the middle or on the left.” Martínez’s face says it all. Brilliant acting!
A great loss for music and for Aston Villa
Without a doubt, the passing of Ozzy Osbourne is a major loss for the world of music—and for the fans of Aston Villa, affectionately known as the Villans.
Rest in peace, Prince of Darkness.
