Crystal Palace 2-1 Brighton: Nine-man hosts hold out for victory in M23 derby
Crystal Palace claimed bragging rights after holding out for victory over Brighton in an M23 derby that saw three players sent off.
Daniel Munoz scored the winner in the M23 derby as nine-man Crystal Palace held on to edge out 10-man Brighton at Selhurst Park.
The Colombian's fourth Premier League goal of the season got the Eagles back to winning ways, following their 1-1 draw with bottom side Southampton in midweek.
Palace broke through after just three minutes as Eberechi Eze found Jean-Philippe Mateta, who took the ball in his stride before beating Bart Verbruggen in emphatic fashion.
Brighton levelled in the 31st minute when Danny Welbeck rounded off a fine move by volleying home Yankuba Minteh's cross from close range.
Munoz regained the hosts' advantage within 10 minutes of the restart, however, drilling past Verbruggen following a swift counter by the hosts.
The Eagles had to navigate 12 additional minutes after Eddie Nketiah and Marc Guehi were dismissed, but did so to record their sixth win in seven matches in all competitions.
Oliver Glasner's side moved up a place to 11th and within four points of eighth-place Brighton, who had Jan Paul van Hecke sent off in stoppage time and suffered only their second defeat in nine away games.
Data Debrief: Palace double up to make history
Palace completed their first league double over Brighton in the top flight, while becoming the first team in Premier League history to win a game having received two red cards.
Following Van Hecke's late dismissal, this marked the first Premier League game to feature three red cards since Southampton played West Bromwich Albion in April 2013.
Mateta got the ball rolling with his 23rd non-penalty goal in the division since Glasner's first match in charge in February 2024, with only Alexander Isak (26) and Erling Haaland (25) scoring more such goals in that time.
Welbeck's equaliser was his 31st Premier League goal for Brighton, seeing him surpass Pascal Gross (30) to become their leading scorer in the division outright.
