Diogo Jota: Career, titles and personal life before the tragic accident
Football mourns the loss of a talent who was just beginning to write his legacy. Diogo Jota leaves an immense void—on the pitch and in the hearts of all who knew him.
The beginning of a dream in Portugal
Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, better known as Diogo Jota, was born in Massarelos, Portugal, and from an early age showed a unique bond with the ball. He came up through the youth systems of Gondomar and then Paços de Ferreira, making his professional debut in 2014 and never looking back. His talent quickly caught the eye of Atlético Madrid, who signed him in 2016 before sending him on loan to Porto—where he began to shine.
The rise with Wolves and the leap to elite status with the Reds
Jota truly broke through at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He dazzled in the Championship, helped secure promotion, and left his mark in the Premier League with goals, pace, and flair. That success earned him a move to the big stage: Liverpool. In 2020, he arrived at Anfield to become part of one of the most feared attacking lines in world football. With the Reds, he played on magical European nights, fought for domestic titles, and became key to a golden generation.
Trophies, family and an eternal love
Professionally, he had recently lifted the Premier League with Liverpool and the UEFA Nations League with Portugal, where he had become a regular presence and earned nearly 50 senior caps. Off the pitch, Jota was also in a beautiful moment of his life—just 11 days ago, he married his partner Rute Cardoso, the mother of their three children.
A senseless tragedy
Diogo Jota’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident alongside his brother, André Silva, who was also a professional footballer. He was only 28 years old. His story, one that seemed to have many chapters left to tell, ended far too soon. Today, football mourns… and the world says goodbye to a world-class player and, above all, a good man.
