Euro 2024 omission inspires Branthwaite as Tuchel's first England squad awaits
Thomas Tuchel will name his first England squad on Friday, and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite hopes to be included for his country.
Jarrad Branthwaite continues to use his Euro 2024 omission as "motivation", with the Everton defender eyeing an inclusion in Thomas Tuchel's first England squad.
Gareth Southgate left the Everton defender in the cold as England went all the way to the final, only to suffer a gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat to Spain on the European Championship stage.
Branthwaite was expected to make the step up to the senior side for the tournament in Germany, though was left to watch on as Southgate opted to look elsewhere.
The 22-year-old hopes for a different outcome when new head coach Tuchel names his first squad on Friday.
"I think every player does have an eye on it," Branthwaite said to BBC Sport when asked if he is already looking ahead to next year's World Cup.
"I missed out recently with a big squad and I don't want that feeling again. That gave me motivation to [make sure] every game I play is my best to help my club and then give myself the best possible chance to be in the England squad.
"Once it comes around, that is my main ambition – to be picked in that squad."
England face Albania on March 21 and Latvia three days later to start their World Cup qualifying campaign, with Tuchel reportedly speaking to numerous players on the phone already in preparation.
"It is nice to have that connection with the new manager and to know he is watching you play and lets you know how you have done," Branthwaite said, confirming his talk with Tuchel.
Branthwaite has also played his role in Everton's revival under David Moyes, with the Toffees just a point above the Premier League relegation zone when the former West Ham boss was appointed.
Everton have subsequently climbed 16 points clear of the bottom three, and Branthwaite says Moyes has added a different feeling around Goodison Park.
"When the old manager was here, we had the defensive structure, and we still have that now - he brought that to us," said Branthwaite. "When the new manager came in, he has kept that pretty similar.
"He has maybe added a bit more attacking threat and knowledge, we have kept the ball better as a team. We have built up with a bit more control, so it is not as end-to-end.
"If you watch the games now compared to last season, you can see the main differences. We are creating a lot more chances and it has given our strikers the opportunities to score goals, and they have been doing that."
