Everton 2-2 Liverpool: Tarkowski stunner caps final Goodison Park derby
Liverpool fell agonisingly short of victory in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, with James Tarkowski netting late on for Everton.
James Tarkowski struck a 98th-minute equaliser as Everton claimed a dramatic 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, stopping the visitors from going nine points clear at the Premier League summit.
Beto had been the beneficiary from an innovative set-piece to put the home side ahead in the first half, but goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah flipped Tuesday's game on its head.
Mac Allister headed a Salah cross into the bottom-left corner to level things up, then Salah pounced on a loose ball to put Liverpool ahead in the 73rd minute.
Just as they looked set to pull further clear of title rivals Arsenal, Arne Slot's Reds were hit with a stunning blow deep into stoppage time.
Arriving unmarked onto Tim Iroegbunam's flick-on, Tarkowski gave Alisson no chance with a ferocious finish into the roof of the net, prompting several over-excited fans to spill onto the playing surface amid the wild celebrations.
A long VAR check for a potential offside in the build-up and a possible foul on Ibrahima Konate followed, but the goal was confirmed to spark incredible scenes at Goodison.
The drama continued after full-time as Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure – as well as Liverpool coach Slot – were all shown red cards amid a fracas involving both sets of players.
Everton climb one place in the table to go 15th, while Liverpool are seven clear of Arsenal at the top ahead of hosting Wolves on Sunday.
Data Debrief: Spoils shared after manic draw
Tuesday's game was the 120th and final Merseyside derby to be played at Goodison Park in all competitions, and the 38th such match to be drawn.
That means Everton and Liverpool finish the Goodison era with exactly 41 derby wins apiece at the ground.
It looked like Salah would be the hero when he finished right-footed to put Liverpool in the ascendency in the second half, scoring for the eighth time in Premier League Merseyside derbies. Only Steven Gerrard (nine) has more such goals.
It was also the 40th Premier League game to see Salah both score and assist, but his efforts were not enough, as Tarkowski wrote himself into derby folklore at the death.
