Liverpool 4-1 Ipswich Town: In-form Gakpo cuts down Tractor Boys
Liverpool continued their push for the Premier League title with a ruthless home win over Ipswich Town.
Liverpool stretched their unbeaten home Premier League record to nine games as Arne Slot's side eased to a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town, with in-form Cody Gakpo scoring twice and setting up another.
The Reds' title lead remains at six points, as rivals Arsenal sealed a late 1-0 victory away at relegation-battling Wolves after being reduced to 10 men.
So while Liverpool could not extend their advantage, they remain six points clear and still hold a game in hand advantage over the second-placed Gunners.
The final result was effectively secured by a dominant first-half showing from the hosts at Anfield as goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah and Gakpo wrapped up a one-sided opening 45 minutes with Ipswich's defensive game plan completely dismantled by the home team.
With the contest settled at the start of the second period, the Reds extended their advantage to four when Gakpo glided into the box to nod in Trent Alexander-Arnold's whipped cross, before Jacob Greaves headed home an Ipswich consolation goal in added time.
Liverpool end the weekend with their lead at the top of the table intact, but another Premier League loss for Ipswich keeps Kieran McKenna's team inside the relegation zone in 18th place, behind Wolves on goal difference.
Data Debrief: Gakpo matches Dutch greats
The double here saw Gakpo become just the third Dutch player to score in five consecutive Premier League home games, following in the footsteps of Ruud van Nistelrooy (August 2003) and Robin van Persie (twice in March 2012 and January 2013).
Eight league goals already this season means Gakpo has now matched his league tally for 2023-24 at just over the half-way point of the current campaign. Those numbers continue the theme of players smashing targets at the start of 2025 under Slot's leadership.
Luis Diaz is also on eight goals, in a mirror of his own league total from last season, with Salah now overtaking his mark (19 league goals compared to 18) from 2023-24.
