Liverpool Is Already Considering Keeping Ronald Araujo

Ronald Araujo has needed only a few weeks to earn an important role in Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool, and his performances have already prompted the club to take a closer look at the purchase option included in his loan agreement.

Araujo Quickly Wins Over Iraola

Ronald Araujo arrived in England with a clear objective: to regain consistent playing time.

Liverpool officially completed his signing on August 10 on a season-long loan from Barcelona for the 2026/27 campaign. The Uruguayan arrived at Anfield after making 213 appearances for the Catalan club and with enough experience to provide an immediate solution for Iraola.

So far, the adaptation has been quick.

According to Mundo Deportivo, after his first seven appearances, five of them as a starter, both Iraola and Liverpool are pleased with his performances and attitude. The defender initially featured at center back before finding another role in the team at right back.

That ability to play in more than one position could ultimately prove decisive when the time comes to determine his future.

The Night Against Atlético de Madrid Changed the Perception

If there was one match capable of accelerating Araujo’s adaptation to Anfield, it was probably the Champions League clash against Atlético de Madrid.

The Uruguayan started at right back in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory and played a direct role in the comeback with a backheel assist for Dominik Szoboszlai. His performance earned additional recognition, with supporters voting him the club’s Player of the Match.

It was not simply an impressive individual performance. It also showed a different version of the player who had primarily been associated with the center-back position during his years at Barcelona.

When introducing the Uruguayan, Liverpool itself highlighted that although his natural position is in central defense, he is also capable of playing on the right. That versatility is beginning to give Iraola an important option to reshape his back line without necessarily changing personnel.

The €55 Million That Could Separate Araujo From Barcelona

This is where the most important part of the deal comes into play.

The loan agreement between Barcelona and Liverpool runs through June 30, 2027, something officially confirmed by both clubs. However, Mundo Deportivo reported that the deal also includes a non-mandatory €55 million purchase option.

That leaves Liverpool in control of the decision at the end of the season.

There is no obligation to sign him permanently, and seven appearances are still far too small a sample size to make a decision of that magnitude. But his strong start has changed the conversation: instead of simply asking how much he can help for one season, the club is beginning to consider whether he could become part of its long-term project.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Araujo’s performances and adaptation have already fueled speculation about a potential permanent stay in England.

Barcelona Still Controls Araujo’s Future

The situation does not leave Barcelona without protection either.

Before leaving for England, Araujo had already secured his long-term future in Catalonia. In January 2025, the club officially announced his contract extension through June 30, 2031.

That means if Liverpool decides not to activate the purchase option, the defender will remain under contract with the Catalan club.

Araujo has also made no secret of the fact that he continues to follow his former dressing room closely. After the match against Atlético de Madrid, he said he still follows Barcelona, is happy for his former teammates and considers the club one of the contenders to win the Champions League, according to Mundo Deportivo.

For now, no final decision has been made, and almost the entire season remains ahead.

But Araujo has already accomplished something important during his first few weeks in England: he has turned a loan move designed to help him regain a prominent role into a genuine opportunity to convince Liverpool to pay €55 million to keep him permanently.
