Now, Manchester City, the club he left to join Atlético Madrid in 2024, have reportedly asked about the conditions of a potential deal to bring the Argentine striker back.
Manchester City Ask About Julián Álvarez
The future of Julián Álvarez has taken another turn with only a few days remaining before the transfer window closes.
According to SPORT, the English club have approached Atlético to explore the possibility of a loan. City are looking to strengthen their attack following several moves during this transfer window and see Julián as an option who already knows the club and the Premier League extremely well.
For now, it is only an initial approach, and there are significant obstacles standing in the way of a potential return to Manchester. The biggest one is quite simple: Julián does not appear to have a return to England among his priorities.
City Look to Bring Back a Familiar Face
Julián Álvarez joined Manchester City from River Plate and spent two seasons with the English club before moving to Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2024.
During his time in Manchester, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, playing a role in the team’s historic treble during the 2022-23 season.
Now there is a possibility of a reunion, although the circumstances are completely different.
City have reportedly explored a loan move, while Atlético Madrid do not appear willing to facilitate a deal under those terms. The Spanish club have maintained a very firm stance regarding the value of one of their biggest stars, meaning any move would require a significant proposal.
But even if the two clubs were able to find a financial solution, they would still have to convince the player.
Julián Does Not Want to Return to the Premier League
That could be the biggest problem for Manchester City.
Julián already knows English soccer extremely well and, according to reports surrounding his future, he has little interest in returning to the Premier League. That position also complicates any possibility of a move to Arsenal, another club linked with the striker during the closing stages of the transfer window. Recent reports in England indicate that the Argentine has still not shown a willingness to seriously consider a Premier League return.
The Argentine’s priority during this transfer window had been different. FC Barcelona emerged as his preferred destination, but that door is now practically closed.
Atlético Madrid have been emphatic: they will not negotiate Julián’s transfer with Barcelona. The club unanimously backed that position and, although they remain open to considering moves involving other teams, they have ruled out any negotiations with the Catalan side.
That leaves the Spider in a complicated situation. He wants to resolve his future, but the options available do not necessarily match what he is looking for.
An Increasingly Complicated Situation at Atlético
While new potential destinations continue to emerge, Julián Álvarez remains an Atlético Madrid player.
The striker has endured a difficult few days, and Diego Simeone confirmed that he would not be available for the match against Sevilla. The club have also publicly acknowledged that the Argentine is going through a difficult moment as he attempts to resolve his future.
Atlético also remain in a strong position in any potential negotiation. Julián arrived from Manchester City in 2024 and remains under contract with the Spanish club until 2030.
Manchester City are now another name in a story that still appears far from over.
City are asking, Arsenal remain interested, Barcelona have seen the door closed, and Julián does not appear convinced about returning to England.
Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid still have something very important on their side: the player’s contract.
