Maresca highlights importance of Chelsea momentum ahead of derby
After overcoming Tottenham, Chelsea continue their quest for a top-four Premier League finish when they visit Brentford.
Enzo Maresca has called on Chelsea to harbour the momentum built by Thursday's win over Tottenham when they face Brentford in another London derby on Sunday.
A second-half header from Enzo Fernandez guided Chelsea to a 1-0 win over Spurs last time out, in a game they dominated for long periods.
The victory lifted Chelsea back into the top four of the Premier League table after four of their rivals for Champions League qualification – Nottingham Forest, Manchester City,
Newcastle United and Aston Villa – recorded victories of their own earlier in the week.
"Every time you win, preparation for the next game is better," Maresca said at Friday's press conference, as he previewed Chelsea's trip to the Gtech Community Stadium.
"Hopefully, from the Tottenham game we can build momentum, knowing that every game will be difficult until the end."
Maresca knows the tight turnaround between Chelsea's two games this week presents a challenge, saying: "We need to recover energy and go again. For Sunday, it will be about how we manage the tiredness. Brentford for sure will be a very tough game.
"You saw on Wednesday night they lost away at Newcastle, but it was a tough game. From now on, every game is going to be tough.
"The target is to try to finish where we have been all season. In the first five or six months, because we were second, the expectations changed a little bit. But all season, we have been in the top four or five, and we will try our best to finish there."
Brentford lost 2-1 at Newcastle last time out, with Sandro Tonali's spectacular goal handing the Magpies victory after Bryan Mbeumo cancelled out Alexander Isak's opener.
But the Bees remain firmly in contention for a top-half finish, with potentially an outside shot at Europe. They are 11th with 41 points, three adrift of Bournemouth in 10th.
Forward Kevin Schade said: "We are all enjoying it. It has been a very good season for each of us. We fight for each other and the goals are coming naturally.
"I'm quick and Brentford's system is to play quickly at the top, with deep runners and crosses from the outside. That's my game, the style fits my game."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brentford – Yoane Wissa
Wissa has had a hand in 13 goals in his last 14 home Premier League appearances (11 goals, two assists), and the Brentford forward scored the Bees' second goal in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea in this fixture last season.
Chelsea – Cole Palmer
Palmer assisted Fernandez's winner against Spurs on Thursday, ending a 15-game wait for an assist in Premier League action.
It was also the England international's first goal involvement in the competition since scoring in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in mid-January, and he will be determined to kick on now.
MATCH PREDICTION – CHELSEA WIN
Having won the reverse fixture 2-1 in December, Chelsea are looking to complete their first league double over Brentford since the 1946-47 campaign.
The Blues enter this one as favourites, with Brentford having struggled at home lately.
Brentford have gone seven Premier League games without a win at the Gtech Community Stadium (two draws, five defeats), their worst run in the league since a nine-game streak between September and December 2006 – they finished bottom of League One that season.
Frank's men are also the only side without a home Premier League clean sheet this season and have gone 16 home league games without a shutout dating back to last campaign.
However, Chelsea will have to overcome their own travel sickness. In all competitions, they have won two of their last 10 away games (two draws, six losses) and those victories took place in Kazakhstan (3-1 versus Astana) and Denmark (2-1 against Copenhagen).
Maresca's men have won none of their last eight away games in England (two draws, six defeats), but they will back themselves to end that run here.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
