Pep Guardiola Explains Why Erling Haaland Was Substituted After Scoring Against Fulham
A routine win turned into a talking point when City’s star striker didn’t return after halftime… and Pep had a sharp response ready.
City Keep the Pressure at the Top
Manchester City remain firmly in the title race after a comfortable 3-0 win over Fulham FC at the Etihad Stadium. The reigning champions wrapped up the game within 39 minutes, continuing their battle at the top of the Premier League alongside Arsenal and the ever-dangerous Aston Villa.
Yet despite the convincing scoreline, the biggest talking point came at the start of the second half.
Why Was Haaland Taken Off?
Erling Haaland, who scored and now has 22 league goals this season, did not return to the pitch after the break. Speculation quickly followed: Was it an injury? A tactical decision? A precaution?
Pep Guardiola addressed the situation head-on in his post-match press conference. “Are you suggesting Erling shouldn’t play?” he fired back when asked whether another forward’s presence might be affecting the Norwegian’s role. The City manager then clarified that the substitution was driven by the player’s own feedback.
“I Don’t Feel Comfortable”
According to Guardiola, Haaland told him he did not feel entirely comfortable, even with City leading 3-0. “I didn’t speak with the doctors. I don’t know exactly what it is. Just some discomfort, fatigue or something like that,” Pep explained.
With a packed schedule ahead and attacking options like Omar Marmoush available, Guardiola chose caution over risk — a decision rooted in common sense rather than statistics.
Haaland’s Historic Impact
The substitution does little to overshadow Haaland’s continued impact. With 153 goals for Manchester City, he has now climbed to fourth on the club’s all-time scoring list, surpassing Colin Bell.
In a season defined by silverware ambitions, Guardiola made it clear that protecting his star striker matters more than chasing individual milestones. At City, the priority remains the team’s success.
