Pep Guardiola Says He Is Staying at Manchester City While Media Outlets Name Xabi Alonso as a Candidate
Pep Guardiola clears up doubts about his Manchester City future and insists he will honor his contract. The Spanish manager reaffirmed his commitment to the Premier League champions, despite growing speculation about a possible departure next summer.
Pep Guardiola is not going anywhere
Guardiola, who signed a contract extension with Manchester City until June 2027 in late 2024, delivered a firm message during Friday’s press conference: “I have one year left on my contract.” When asked again about his future at the Etihad Stadium, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach said his position has not changed in recent months and that he plans to remain with Manchester City.
The Santpedor-born manager will celebrate ten years in charge of Manchester City this summer, completing one of the most successful managerial eras in Premier League history. During that period, Guardiola has won every major trophy available, including six Premier League titles — four in a row — and Manchester City’s first UEFA Champions League.

Still, next summer could bring major changes across the global coaching landscape, partly influenced by the 2026 World Cup in the United States, which continues to fuel speculation about Guardiola potentially coaching a national team in the future. Thomas Tuchel, for instance, is approaching the end of his contract with England, while Guardiola has previously expressed interest in international management.
Meanwhile, the coaching market includes figures connected to the Manchester City project, such as Enzo Maresca, Guardiola’s former assistant, strengthening talk of a possible managerial domino effect in European football.
For now, however, Guardiola’s message remains clear: he will stay at Manchester City and fulfill his contract through 2027.
