The football world mourns the tragic death of Diogo Jota
The death of the Liverpool forward sent shockwaves through international football, and messages of support are pouring in from all over the world for the player’s family and friends.
Football woke up in mourning this Thursday following the heartbreaking news of the death of Diogo Jota, Liverpool and Portugal striker, in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, where his brother André Silva also lost his life. The tragic event deeply impacted the global football community, and reactions quickly began to pour in.
The first message came from Liverpool, his current club. Through their official channels, the club stated: “The club has been informed that (Diogo Jota, aged 28) has passed away following a traffic accident in Spain alongside his brother, André.” They added: “Liverpool will make no further comment at this time and requests that the privacy of Diogo and André’s family, friends, teammates and all club staff is respected at this unimaginable time.”
From Portugal, Porto FC, where Jota also played earlier in his career, quickly shared their condolences: “Porto FC is in mourning. With shock and deep sorrow, we extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth categories. May they rest in peace.”
His time at Wolverhampton, the club where he rose to international fame, was also remembered fondly: “Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and appreciated by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten. Our hearts are with the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre. We will truly miss you and will always remember you.”
The Portuguese national team, with which he won the UEFA Nations League, shared a heartfelt message: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain. Much more than a fantastic player, with almost 50 caps for the senior national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person…”
Even clubs where he never played, such as Sporting CP, paid tribute to the late footballer: “The football world has become poorer. Sporting CP expresses its condolences on the passing of Portuguese international Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Our deepest sympathies to the whole family during this difficult time.”
Even Liverpool’s biggest Premier League rivals, like Manchester City, took the time to mourn the Portuguese forward’s passing — and in City’s case, they did so with a touching image alongside Bernardo Silva.
And of course, the message from his national teammate and Portugal’s biggest star, Cristiano Ronaldo, was not to be missed. He shared heartfelt words: "It makes no sense. Just now we were together with the national team, just now you were getting married. To your family, your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you’ll always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and André. We will all miss you."

As a final gesture, the Portuguese Football Federation has submitted a request to UEFA to observe a minute of silence in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother André ahead of Thursday’s Women’s UEFA match between Spain and Portugal, and the European confederation has complied with this request.
This is a developing story.
