Viktor Gyökeres saga ends: Arsenal and Sporting CP agree on striker’s €80m transfer
After weeks of tension and public back-and-forth, Arsenal finally get their way. Viktor Gyökeres will become their new star No.9 after a big-money deal with Sporting CP. Could this be the final piece to end a 21-year title drought?
A transfer drama with a happy ending for the Gunners
After weeks of rumors, pressure, and stalled talks, it looks like Viktor Gyökeres finally has a new home: Arsenal. The 27-year-old Swedish striker will join from Sporting CP in a deal worth around €80 million, combining a €63.5M fixed fee with up to €15M in performance bonuses, according to The Guardian and Daily Mail.
The breakthrough reportedly came over the weekend, after Gyökeres refused to report for training. His stance was clear: “I want to play in the Premier League,” he told France Football, confirming his desire to return to England after a brief stint with Brighton. His incredible form at Sporting — 54 goals in 52 games — convinced Arsenal to raise their offer and close the deal.
Sporting earn more… with no agent fees
There’s also a rare financial twist. No commissions will be paid to intermediaries (typically 10%), meaning Sporting will retain a larger share of the fee — a rare win in big transfers of this scale.
Still, Sporting president Frederico Varandas didn’t hold back. He warned of possible sanctions for the striker’s absence, but added: “Everything can be solved with a fine and an apology.” His message to Arsenal? “If they don’t pay the fair market value, we’re happy to keep him for the next three years.”
Arsenal go all in for the Premier League
Gyökeres is not the only move on the board. Mikel Arteta is building a title-contending team and already secured Martín Zubimendi. Next up: Noni Madueke, set to undergo a medical and sign from Chelsea for £52 million, and a new offer is expected for Cristian Mosquera, who already agreed personal terms.
Meanwhile, Leandro Trossard could be sold to balance the books, with Bayern Munich, Fenerbahçe, and clubs in Saudi Arabia all showing interest.
Gyökeres: Premier League return with a point to prove
Gyökeres now gets a second chance in a league that once overlooked him. With a five-year contract in hand, he’ll join Arsenal’s Asia pre-season tour right away, eager to lead a squad that’s been chasing the Premier League title for 21 long years.
