Wayne Rooney, Manchester United's all-time top scorer, surprised everyone with a statement that resonated loudly in the soccer world: Marcus Rashford is, according to him, the only player capable of breaking his record at the club. However, the former captain laid down a clear condition: the striker must show enough "hunger" to represent the Red Devils.

Rashford wore the United jersey again last Saturday after more than a year and a half away, coming off the bench in the 4-2 loss to Milan at the end of the preseason. The English striker has scored 138 goals in 426 official matches, still 115 behind Rooney's record

Rashford's future, between doubts and demands

The forward's future remains uncertain. He spent the last 18 months on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona, and did not hide his desire to stay at the Catalan club. Rooney, interviewed on the Disney+ show Stick to United, was blunt:

"If he wants to stay at the club, he needs to step up. He is the player who could reach my goal record. I don't want to see him shine at Aston Villa or Barcelona, I want to see him do it at United. But for that, he has to keep his head down, work hard, be more positive, and play with a smile."

Rashford's recent numbers are encouraging with four goals and five assists in 17 matches with Villa, and 25 direct goal contributions (14 goals and 11 assists) in Barça's championship-winning season in LaLiga 2025-26.

The mystery ahead of the Premier debut

Although Rooney acknowledges Rashford's talent, he insists that he needs to improve his body language and attitude on the field:

"We know he has the ability, he has proven it. But, is he hungry? Do you want to play for United? I went through something similar in 2010, I asked to leave and then I stayed. You have to rebuild the relationship with the fans, and the easiest way is to work hard."

United will debut in the Premier League this Saturday against Hull City, and coach Michael Carrick has not yet confirmed if Rashford will remain on the team. The question is posed: Will Rashford be the man who finally surpasses Rooney's scoring legacy in Manchester?
