What Happened to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool Player Who Died in a Tragic Accident?
The football world remains in shock. What caused the accident that took the life of Liverpool’s forward and his brother? Here’s everything we know so far.
A tragic early morning
In the early hours of Thursday, July 4, the football world woke up to devastating news: Diogo Jota, forward for Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team, died alongside his brother André Silva in a car accident on the A-52 highway, at kilometer 65.300, in the town of Cernadilla, Zamora (Spain).
The two were traveling in a Lamborghini which, according to early reports, suffered a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle. The car veered off the road, crashed, and instantly caught fire.
The car was completely destroyed
By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, there was nothing they could do. The vehicle was completely burned out, with the lifeless bodies of Diogo and André inside. Emergency crews focused on cooling the area to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby vegetation.
The autopsy is being carried out at the Forensic Institute of Zamora, where medical examiners are relying on DNA tests to officially confirm the identities due to the condition of the remains.
Who was André Silva?
Though less known internationally, André Silva, 25, was also a professional footballer. He played for Futebol Clube Penafiel in Portugal’s second division and was previously part of FC Porto’s youth academy.
An unexpected ending
At just 28 years old, Diogo Jota was enjoying one of the best moments of his career and personal life, having recently won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal and the Premier League with Liverpool. The tragedy has left a deep void in the world of sports, which is still trying to come to terms with the loss.
