Which English Teams Could Make It to the Champions League?
As the fight for the Premier League title seems over, teams now focus on a spot in the biggest European competition.
As Liverpool secured a win over Manchester City and Arsenal lost 1-0 to West Ham this weekend, fans of the Scouse team celebrate what looks like a potential league title.
The trophy is not yet clinched, but Liverpool comfortably sits with an 11-point advantage over the second-place team, Arsenal, with only 11 games to go. Opta’s supercomputer calculates a chance of 96.6% of Liverpool winning the title.
Although Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has already come out saying his team will not give up on the fight for a title, the intense battle shifts to which Premier League teams will secure the 5 spots for the Champions League next year.
English teams might now have 5 spots in the UCL
Two European leagues will be awarded an extra spot in the 2025-26 Champions League based on their overall performance in all UEFA competitions this year.
The Premier League already has four spots secured into the Champions League. Now, the fifth place in the league could also secure a place in the most-renowned European league.
The English league now sits at the top of the UEFA ranking, with a great chance of securing a spot alongside La Liga, which might secure an additional spot as well. Italy sits close in third place.
Which teams might make it?
Currently, only 7 points separate Manchester City, the fourth-placed team, and Brentford who is ranked eleventh. Nottingham Forest, placed in third, also only has a tight advantage of 7 points over ninth-placed Brighton.
This means competition within English teams for a spot in the Champions League is fierce, with nearly half the league fighting for a place.
Although Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are placed twelfth and fifteenth in the Premier League, they are also ranked fourth and third in the Europa League.
This leaves both teams fighting for the Europa League trophy and a potential sixth English spot in the Champions League through it.
Liverpool and Arsenal are the most likely to have their spots already guaranteed for next year. According to Opta’s supercomputer, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest have a chance of 87.9% and 62.7% to secure a spot in the top 5 of the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Opta calculates that Newcastle United and Chelsea have a chance of 53.3% and 44.9% as of February 24, 2025, keeping them in the fierce competition for a spot in the Champions League.
