Will FC Porto Win Liga Portugal Again?
FC Porto enters the 2026-27 Liga Portugal season with one clear objective: defending the league title. The Dragons have managed to keep the core of their championship-winning squad together while adding new talent, making them the early favorites to repeat as Portuguese champions.
Under head coach Francesco Farioli and club president André Villas-Boas, Porto has built a squad capable of competing both domestically and in Europe. The club has also started the new campaign on a winning note, defeating second-division side SCU Torreense 1-0 to lift the Portuguese Super Cup after Victor Froholdt scored the decisive goal. Torreense qualified for the match after its remarkable Portuguese Cup triumph last season.

Samu remains Porto’s main attacking threat after scoring 13 league goals in just 20 appearances last season. Gabri Veiga has quickly become one of the team’s creative leaders in midfield, while Borja Sainz adds pace and versatility in the final third as Porto looks to defend its title.
The club also strengthened its midfield with the signing of South Korean international Hwang In-beom from Feyenoord, adding experience and technical quality to an already balanced squad.
Young Stars and Defensive Stability
Another major reason for optimism is the rapid development of Victor Froholdt. The 20-year-old midfielder has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents and already delivered Porto’s first trophy of the season with his winning goal in the Super Cup.
Premier League clubs are reportedly monitoring the Danish youngster, but Porto remains confident that he can play a crucial role throughout the campaign before any future transfer materializes.
Defensively, the Dragons were equally impressive last season. Porto lost only two league matches during its title-winning campaign, while goalkeeper Diogo Costa once again proved to be one of the best shot-stoppers in Portugal. That defensive consistency could once again become one of the club’s biggest advantages in a tight championship race.
Can Anyone Stop Porto?
Sporting CP and Benfica are both expected to challenge for the title, but Porto appears to have something its rivals lack: continuity.
Keeping the majority of the championship-winning squad together while adding experienced reinforcements gives Farioli the opportunity to build on an already successful project instead of starting over.
Winning back-to-back league titles is never easy, especially in one of Europe’s most competitive domestic competitions. However, with André Villas-Boas leading the club, a balanced squad full of proven performers and emerging stars, and confidence already boosted by another Super Cup triumph, FC Porto has every reason to believe it can finish at the top of Liga Portugal once again.
