Leandro Paredes Confirms "Boca Juniors" Clause in His Renewal with AS Roma
Leandro Paredes recently confirmed that his renewal with AS Roma includes a special clause allowing him to return to Boca Juniors. The Argentine midfielder, world champion in Qatar 2022, made it clear that this contractual provision is exclusive to the Xeneize club, with no option for other teams to use it. "Yes, it’s true. It’s only for Boca, no one else," he said after the match against Uruguay in the South American World Cup Qualifiers.
Paredes' new contract with Roma runs until June 2026, but it includes a clause that gives Boca the option to acquire his transfer for 3.5 million euros (approximately 3.7 million dollars). This clause can be activated during two transfer windows: May and December, opening the door for a potential return of the midfielder to Argentina before the 2025 Club World Cup, which will be held in the United States starting on June 14.
An Agreement with an Uncertain Future
Regarding his decision to renew with Roma under these terms, Paredes explained that the Italian club decided to bring forward the contract extension due to his appearances and almost fulfilled objectives. "I have to be totally grateful to Roma because, while this renewal was going to happen, the club chose to bring it forward and put this clause in the middle, so I’m thankful to my club," said the midfielder.
Paredes also acknowledged that his immediate departure won’t be easy, but he remains hopeful about returning to Boca at some point. "I’m aware that it’s going to be very difficult. The easiest window was in January, when I did everything I could to be there, but it didn’t happen for various reasons," he admitted. If the operation goes through, Boca won’t have to pay the entire clause in one go but can do so in four installments of 875,000 euros (approximately 920,000 dollars) each.
Boca's Interest and the Financial Challenge
The management of Boca Juniors, led by Juan Román Riquelme, has always shown interest in bringing back players with a history at the club. The close relationship between them could be a key factor in making Paredes' return a reality. However, the financial challenge remains an obstacle, as Boca will need to agree on the salary terms of his contract with the player.
For now, Paredes' future remains in the hands of Boca and its management. If the club decides to proceed with negotiations, the midfielder’s return could be finalized in the next transfer window, representing a major reinforcement for the team in its upcoming international challenges.
