Offensive Emergency for Inter: Lautaro and Thuram Sidelined
Inter Milan faces a challenging situation after the international break, as its starting attacking duo, Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram, have returned with injuries that could impact Simone Inzaghi’s plans during a crucial phase of the season.
Two Key Absences in Inter's Attack
The first to leave his national team’s camp was Marcus Thuram, who suffered an ankle issue and had to return to Italy from France. Shortly after, Lautaro Martínez also withdrew from Argentina’s squad due to a hamstring injury sustained in the recent Serie A victory against Atalanta.
The Argentine striker initially traveled to join Lionel Scaloni’s squad, hoping to play in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil. However, after undergoing medical tests, it was confirmed that his condition was incompatible with participation in these matches.
So far, the Lautaro-Thuram duo has been crucial for Inter, contributing a combined total of 24 goals and 7 assists in Serie A. This means they have been directly involved in nearly half of the team’s 64 league goals, highlighting their importance in Inzaghi’s tactical setup.
Tough Schedule with Key Players Injured
The timing of these injuries couldn’t be worse for Inter, as the team is battling for the Serie A title and will face Udinese immediately after the international break. Shortly after, they have a high-stakes Coppa Italia semifinal clash against AC Milan, one of the most anticipated matches of the season.
While Thuram’s injury appears less severe, Lautaro Martínez could miss both games, with his return expected on April 4 against Parma. If he avoids setbacks, he should be available for the crucial Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Bayern Munich on April 8.
With both main strikers possibly sidelined, manager Simone Inzaghi will have to rely on backup options. Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic and Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi are the most likely candidates to lead the attack in the upcoming matches.
Adding to these challenges, Inter is also dealing with other notable injuries, including Italian Federico Dimarco and Polish duo Nikola Zalewski and Piotr Zielinski, all of whom sustained issues during the international break.
With a demanding schedule ahead and key players in doubt, Inter Milan must quickly find solutions to stay on course in their domestic and European campaigns.
