Juventus 0-4 Atalanta: Gasperini's side run riot to keep title hopes alive
Atalanta are now three points adrift of Serie A leaders Inter after putting four goals past a toothless Juventus side on Sunday.
Atalanta ran riot at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday as they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Juventus to strengthen their grip on third place in Serie A.
The result also saw Atalanta win an away game against Juventus by at least two goals for the first time in their Serie A history, in what was a stunning display.
Mateo Retegui's penalty put the visitors ahead in the 26th minute, with the spot-kick awarded after Weston McKennie had handled the ball inside the area.
It took the visitors 50 seconds to double their lead in the second half as Ademola Lookman's shot was parried into the path of Marten de Roon, who fired the ball home.
Atalanta put the result beyond doubt with a real moment of quality, with a fine free-flowing move seeing Davide Zappacosta find the back of the net after collecting Sead Kolasinac's neat backheel in the box.
Lookman concluded the scoring in the 77th minute, with his strike deflecting off Lloyd Kelly and past the outstretched arm of Michele Di Gregorio, moving Atalanta to within three points of leaders Inter.
Juventus, meanwhile, stay fourth, but are now six points behind Gian Piero Gasperini's side.
Data Debrief: Solid at the back, but ruthless in attack
Having seen their Scudetto hopes fade after a poor run of results, Atalanta may be clinging onto faint hopes of lifting the title this season after an impressive display.
And their performance was built on being solid at the back, yet ruthless in the attack. With Retegui and Lookman, they have two excellent strikers, who contributed an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.36 to Atalanta's 3.75 total.
Indeed, 14 of the 22 goals scored by Retegui in the Italian top-flight have come in away matches. From 1929-30, Ciro Immobile is the only Italian player to score more goals on the road in a single Serie A season, having done so on three occasions (16 in 2017-18, 17 in 2019-20 and 15 in 2021-22).
Atalanta also scored at least four goals in a single match against Juventus for the first time in their history in Serie A.
But they have now kept a clean sheet in at least five consecutive Serie A matches for the fourth time in their history in the top-flight, following six between December 1996 and January 1997, five between October and November 1985, and five between January and February 1967.
